Primer makeup is often described as a preparation step between skincare and base products. It is not essential for every routine, but it can be useful when you enjoy a more even-looking base or want to create a little separation between skincare and foundation.
Decide what you want from the step
Some people look for a comfortable, grippy feel; others prefer a more matte or soft-focus finish. Instead of choosing by trend, think about how your current base behaves through the day. If it already works well, a primer may be optional. If it slides, clings or feels difficult to apply, a light preparation step may help your application feel more controlled.
Use less than you think
Apply a small amount after skincare has settled. Give it a moment, then press on your base in thin layers. Applying too much product at once can make any makeup routine feel less predictable.

Check how your layers work together
Skincare, primer and foundation can behave differently when piled on quickly. Apply each step in a modest amount and allow a moment for it to settle before continuing.
